CHAPTER NINE

Rene handled the surrounding Drakes and any possible magickal threat with a quiet strength and awareness that made me reassess him as a magickal practitioner. The natural aura that rolled out from Rene was impressive. I held my breath for the first few moments, as I had almost expected some type of flashy magickal attack from Duncan after his energetic stunt in the lobby. But even though I spotted him and Angela several times— the museum wasn’t that large, after all— he’d kept his distance from us.

Within a half hour, I had learned something else about Rene Rousseau; that women made fools of themselves around him. I think we’d managed a few moments of private conversation before female after female ambled their way over to introduce themselves to Rene. No matter what their age, background, or relationship status, women seemed to flock around him.

To his credit, he was polite but did not encourage a single one of them. He was business-like, and answered questions about his salon and future spa. He also never let go of my arm. Not for a second. My lips twitched as I wondered, Just who was protecting who? Taking pity on him, I steered us to a less crowded, and darker, part of the museum in the north wing by the offices. As soon as we were out of sight, Rene sighed.

“Well, I think you broke about a dozen hearts out there tonight.” I grinned up at him.

Rene muttered under his breath and rolled his shoulders as if he were tense.

I tucked my tongue in my cheek. “I foresee that your salon will be very busy on Monday...”

“That reaction out there is one of the reasons I don’t mingle with the society types that often,” he admitted.

“Well big guy, we all have our little crosses to bear. You were a professional model after all.” I fluttered up at him like another star struck fan. “You’re sort of famous and everything...”

He chuckled at my silliness. “Like you ever cared about any of that.”

I patted his arm sympathetically. “If it makes you feel better, when I first met you, I thought you were gay.”

Rene did a double take.

“But, to be honest, I thought that more because you are a stylist than because of your looks,” I said. “Sorry about that.”

His mouth opened, then closed. He stared at me for a couple of seconds and then he started to laugh. “Seriously? Well there goes my ego.”

“Ha.” I rolled my eyes at him. “I did a search on the internet, and it seems to me like your ego should be safe. Especially after posing with all those gorgeous female models.” I pressed a friendly kiss to his cheek. “So, okay, you photograph well... I won’t hold it against you.”

Rene grinned at me and leaned down. “Come here,” he said, playfully tugging me closer by the lapels on my jacket.

I lifted my mouth to his, anticipating his kiss. Before we could— I heard someone clearing their throat.

“Excuse me, Miss Bishop?” One of the professors from my grad classes stood a few feet away.
